Fix A Broken Black Sewer Pipe In A Mobile Home

One good thing about mobile homes is that their black sewer pipes are easily accessible from underneath the home. Remove a section of the mobile home skirting to gain access to the black sewer pipes suspended along the bottom. Wash out the entire sewer pipe system with clean water by flushing a clean toilet repeatedly. Another option is to run clean water in the bathroom sink. Wear latex gloves to protect your hands, wear goggles for eye protection and use a dust mask to cover your mouth. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Identify and Remove Damaged Pipe

1. Turn off the water to the mobile home after flushing the septic system with clean water. Drain the water from the toilet by flushing it until no water remains in the tank. Confirm that no one uses any of the plumbing while you work on the mobile home's black sewer pipe.

2. Crawl under the mobile home and identify the pipe that needs replacement. Measure the broken pipe and obtain ABS drain, waste and vent pipe in the needed diameter and length. Include two female couplers to be able to add the new pipe section to the mobile home's sewer pipe.

3. Measure the new pipe section and couplers and confirm they will span the distance.

4. Use the reciprocal or handsaw and cut out the identified and measured broken section. Hold the reciprocal saw in place and pull its trigger to activate the motor. Cut through the pipe in a straight line.

5. File the cut area smooth around the circumference of the black sewer pipe using the metal file. Follow up with sandpaper to ensure no rough edges remain on the cut sides of the sewer pipe. Repeat on the other cut piece of the pipe.

Replacement

6. Use the rag and wipe the area inside the black sewer pipe on both cut pieces until dry. Confirm the area is dry at least 1 inch in from the ends of the cut pipe on both the inside and outside of the pipe.

7. Dry-fit the pieces together to ensure they will fit.

8. Attach the two couplers to the new pipe section. Swab inside one end of the female coupler with primer then glue. Attach the coupler to the new pipe section by twisting it a quarter turn and then holding it in place for 30 seconds. Repeat for the other female coupler on the other end of the new pipe section.

9. Repeat the primer and glue treatment on the new sewer pipe replacement. Set first one side of the new pipe section and then the next onto the existing pipe. This step takes quick work to ensure the glue doesn't dry too quickly. It also takes some work to fit the pipe in place. Hold in place a minimum of 30 seconds. Allow to cure the length of time suggested by the manufacturer.
