Apply For A Government Grant To Buy A House

Buying a house can be very difficult today, especially if you don't have enough money to make a down payment. Luckily for prospective home buyers, there are a wide variety of government grants available for those looking to achieve their dream of home ownership. Whether you are a first-time home buyer, a veteran, plan on caring for foster children or just need help with a down payment, there are options to suit your needs.

Instructions

1. Locate your Taxpayer Identification Number if you plan on applying for grants for individuals, or or an Employer Identification Number if you represent a business or organization. These are available at IRS.gov

2. If you represent a business or organization, register with the Central Contractor Agency on the phone or at ccr.gov. You will need to complete this step annually to continue to be eligible for government grants. Before you do this, you will need a DUNS number. These are used to track where federal grant money is going. DUNS numbers are available online through the Dun & Bradstreet website, or by calling Dun & Bradstreet at 866-705-5711. This can be done in one to two days if you apply online, or immediately through the phone.

3. Register with the Credential Provider at Grants.gov in order to receive your username and password and become an Authorized Organization Representative if you represent an organization. This will allow you to submit government grant applications on behalf of your organization.

4. Register with Grants.gov. This process will only take a few minutes if you have completed all the steps above and will allow you to view detailed information on the grants available, submit grant applications and track application status.

5. Search for government grants for home buyers at Grants.gov. This site has a frequently updated online database of all government grants currently available, including housing grants for individuals and organizations for a variety of purposes. To find government grants for home buyers, click on "browse by category" and select "housing."

6. Download the application package for the grant you are interested in. In order to do this, you will need to have the Funding Opportunity Number for the grant you are applying for on hand. You may also need to download a recent version of the Adobe PDF viewer to view application materials.

7. Make sure you meet all requirements for the grant you intend to apply for, fill out the application completely and submit.

8. Track your application status using your Grants.gov account once you have submitted the application.
