Transfer The Title Of A Mobile Home In Texas

The transfer of a mobile home title in Texas can be done by mail.

In the past, buying or selling a mobile home in Texas meant the transfer of the title. Unfortunately, the state government has changed the name of the process (though not the process itself), making finding information about transfer a mobile home title a little daunting. Instead of a title, now a Statement of Ownership and Location (SOL) must be filed when buying or selling a mobile home in Texas. Also, mobile homes are now referred to as "manufactured homes," necessitating a visit to the Manufactured Housing Division website, instead of the former Mobile Home Division.

Instructions

1. Print out a copy of the Statement of Ownership and Location (SOL) application form.

2. Decide whether you want regular or priority handling of the application. Regular handling means the application will be processed and completed within 15 working days of being received by the department, not including mailing time to and from. Priority means that the application will be processed within 5 business days (not including mail time), but there is a $55 fee. Check the appropriate box for the type of handling on the top of the form.

3. Fill out block 2 of the form, which includes information about the home, such as the manufacturer's name, address, license number, model, square feet and wind zone. If you leave any of these questions blank, it may delay or negate your application.

4. Fill out blocks three and four, which need the current location of the mobile home in order to be completed. The official date of sale is also needed. You are also asked whether this was an outright sale or a trade-in. Make sure you have this information before completing the form.

5. Fill out the rest of the blocks, if applicable. For example, block nine asks for information about liens on the home. There may not be any liens, so you would leave those lines blank. Not all sections may be applicable to this particular mobile home.

6. Have both the buyer and seller sign the form. Though a notary signature is not necessary, it can also be included. The advantage of a notary is that it makes things official and gives both buyer and seller legal recourse should something go wrong with the transfer of title.

7. Double check the form to make sure all information is included, then mail the form to the Manufactured Housing Division in Austin, Texas. The full address is at the very top of the form. Be sure to include any necessary payments, especially if you need priority handling.
