Adjust Windows 7 Ultimate For Netbooks

According to Microsoft, Windows 7 runs fine on any netbook.

Netbooks are miniature laptops that can do many things a regular laptop can. Because they are so small, they usually do not have a CD or DVD drive, which is normally used to install the operating system. Once you get over that hurdle, the next thing to do is adjust Windows 7 to improve performance. Since netbooks aren't always as powerful as a full-featured laptop or computer, these adjustments may be necessary for Windows to run smoothly.

Instructions

1. Use the performance troubleshooter to scan for problems that affect the computer's performance. Open the Control Panel and type "Troubleshooter" in the search box. Click "Find and Fix Problems." Scroll to the bottom where it says "System and Security" and click "Check for Performance Issues." The troubleshooter will give you recommendations once the scanning completes.

2. Remove programs that you do not use. If the netbook is brand-new, it likely came with trial software installed by different software companies. It is assumed that you will try their software and eventually upgrade to a paid version. Keeping unnecessary software on the netbook will slow it down by using disk space and memory. Go to "Start," "Control Panel," "Programs," then "Programs and Features." Choose the program from the list and click "Uninstall."

3. Turn off unnecessary visual effects. This includes Aero features that make Windows look more visually appealing. From the Control Panel, type "Performance Information and Tools." Click "Adjust Visual Effects." You may need to provide an administrator password, then go to the "Visual Effects" tab. Click "Adjust for Best Performance," then "OK" to confirm. Alternatively, choose "Let Windows Choose What's Best for My Computer."

4. Reduce the number of programs that begin at startup. Nearly every program on the computer adds something to the startup list during installation. This will help the programs run faster, but is unnecessary for programs you rarely use. Download "AutoRuns for Windows" to determine what programs are set to run automatically and disable them by clearing the check box.
