How Can I Make My Own Knobs From Stone?
Stone cabinet hardware can be a great addition to any door or drawer. However, these can be very expensive. Luckily, this project can be completed at home for a fraction of the cost of the purchase price. Making these yourself will also give you the opportunity to match color, shape and size. Does this Spark an idea?
Stones
The first step of the project is to choose the stones you wish to make into hardware. There is no limit to the choices you have. Installation is easier if there is at least one 1/4-inch mostly flat area somewhere on the rock. You can purchase polished stones or gemstones or use rocks found on a beach, in a garden or from a river or stream.
Prepare the Stones
Once you have the stones, wash them with warm soapy water and allow them to air dry for at least one day. Flip the stones over onto a dry surface at least once during that time. If you have purchased polished stones, take some sandpaper and rough a spot that is about 1/4 of an inch around for the glue to stick to before you wash them.
Glue
When you are ready to turn your stones into hardware, turn each stone to find the flattest spot to attach the hardware. You can attach these with super glue, epoxy or craft glue. Epoxy is recommended, because craft glue would not last as long. Using the glue of your choice, stick a 1/4-inch cap nut to the flat spot you have prepared with the glue and allow to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
Installation
Once the knobs are dry, you can paint, seal or varnish them if you like or leave them as is. If you choose to varnish them, wait at least four hours between coats and use two coats. Allow them to dry for another 24 hours. To install them, take a 1/4-inch machine screw that is at least 1 inch long through the backside of the cabinet door. Then twist the knob on until it is flush with the door.
