More than 7.9 million people received SSI benefits in 2010.
The Supplemental Social Income (SSI) program is funded by federal tax revenues which distributes benefit payments to the elderly and disabled so they can meet such basic needs as clothing, food and shelter. Based on their low incomes, SSI recipients are eligible to apply for grants from federal government agencies to renovate their homes. Grants cover project costs including equipment and supply purchases and labor and administrative expenses.
The Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program
SSI recipients 62 years of age and older who cannot afford loans apply for grants from the Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program to remove health and safety hazards from their homes. Grants also cover home repairs after the removal of hazards. The maximum grant amount is $7,500. The grant program requires recipients to not sell their homes for at least three years. If homes are sold within the time period, grant funds may be recouped by the program. This grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA.
Weatherization Assistance Program
SSI recipients whose homes need new windows, or need walls and ceilings insulated, can apply for assistance through the Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program. This program pays for weatherization services to make homes energy efficient. Up to $6,500 can be spent on weatherizing homes, and services are provided free of charge to low-income homeowners.
Housing Preservation Grant Program
The USDA also sponsors the Housing Preservation Grant Program, which awards grants to low-income homeowners, including SSI recipients, to renovate and repair their homes. Homeowners in rural areas of fewer than 20,000 residents are eligible to apply for grant funds. Once received, grant recipients have 24 months to use the grants to fix their homes.
Individual Water and Waste Grants
The USDA funds grants for low-income SSI recipients in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California who own colonial-style homes that need new water and waste systems. Grants cover the installation of sinks, tubs and showers, outside spigots, toilets, water heaters and, if necessary, entire bathrooms. Water hookup fees are also paid for with grant funds.
