Grants are available to remodel your home.
Funds are available to assist homeowners with the cost of property repairs. In some cases these funds take the form of loans and require repayment, but in other cases the funds are given as grants with no repayment expected. One of the main qualifications for receiving a grant is usually that a person's income is below a certain level, but this is not always the case. Use of the money is restricted to the purpose for which the grant was made, and often an agency provides a remodeling grant to a person with a specific need or who lives in a certain area. General Remodeling
Some grants cover any kind of remodeling your home needs.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a grant program designed to help you make needed repairs or to remodel your home for health reasons, for convenience or any other purpose. The grant is administered by the USDA office in each state. It is referred to as the Section 504 program, and is available only to homeowners who live in the residence to remodel. Although loans are available to a wide range of people, grants are only offered to homeowners who are 62 or older. To be eligible, your home must not have a value higher than the USDA loan limit in the area, cannot have an in-ground pool and must be a dwelling considered modest for the area. Your adjusted household income cannot be over a low income amount determined to apply to the area where the home is. The money does not have to be repaid unless you sell the home within 3 years of getting the loan.
Disability Accommodations
Some grants are specifically to create home access for the disabled.
Different programs are available for people with disabilities to remodel their homes to make them accessible. Most of these programs are administered at the state level, and you can find them by starting with your state Disability Office, which you'll find on your home state's official website. For example, Connecticut has a program to provide you with a grant to remodel your home for the needs of yourself or a disabled family member. This program is need-based but provides adequate funds for specific projects if approved.
Green Remodeling
Grants are available to add solar panels to your home.
In some cases grant funds are available to remodel your house to make it more "green," which includes weatherization, heating and cooling equipment, insulation, and other environmentally-friendly remodeling projects. King County, Washington has a grant program which provides funds to homeowners remodeling to achieve a high level of Green Certification. The grant amount depends on the green rating the project is assigned at the time it is approved by the county. These grants vary from location to location and are not available in all areas.
