Repair an unreadable DVD.
You may repair an unreadable DVD using common products such as rubbing alcohol, furniture polish or toothpaste. However, for more severely damaged DVDs, you may need to product such as brass cleaner. Whatever product you choose to use to repair your DVD, the repair processes are quite similar.
Instructions
1. Use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to remove smudges from the DVD. Making continuous strokes from the inside of the center to the outer edge. Allow the DVD to air dry when finished cleaning. If the DVD is lightly scratched, proceed to Step 2. If the DVD is moderately scratched, proceed to Step 3. If the DVD is severely scratched, proceed to Step 4.
2. Use furniture polish and a soft cloth to polish the light scratch marks on the surface of an unreadable DVD. Rub the cloth onto the scratched surface in a circular motion to polish the scratches. When finished polishing, clean the DVD with rubbing alcohol as in Step 1.
3. Use toothpaste and a soft cloth to buff out the moderate scratch marks on the surface of an unreadable DVD. Rub the cloth onto the scratched surface in a circular motion to buff out the scratches. The texture of the toothpaste (do not use gel) will wear away the scratches on the DVD. When finished buffing, clean the DVD with rubbing alcohol as in Step 1.
4. Use brass cleaner and a soft cloth to buff out the more severe scratch marks on the surface of an unreadable DVD. Rub the cloth onto the scratched surface in a circular motion to buff out the scratches. The texture of the brass cleaner will wear away the scratches on the DVD in a more accelerated manner than toothpaste. Add more brass cleaner if necessary until most of the scratches have disappeared. When finished buffing, clean the DVD with rubbing alcohol as in Step 1.
