Home Improvement Grants For Moderate Income Families

Home improvement grants provided by the federal government or the local government allow people to repair and renovate houses. These programs typically target low- to moderate-income households, senior citizens or people with fixed incomes. With money from the grants, homeowners can make the required renovations on the exterior and interior of their property. Some states offer different grant programs for homeowners to encourage modifications to improve the energy efficiency of a house. Does this Spark an idea?

Repairs and Renovations

The specific requirements of each grant vary due to the different policies of each local government. However, almost any US citizen whose house is unsafe and hazardous to people and the environment can qualify to receive a grant. As of December 2009, the federal government offers 35 different types of home grant programs. They can be used for installing and replacing unsafe electrical wiring and heating systems, repairing sanitary and water disposal systems, and repairing roofing, stucco, driveways, windows, doors, insulation, carpeting, window screens and fencing. A grant can also be obtained to fix foundational and structural problems of houses. Before work begins, all the improvements must be approved by the specific city's community development department.

Requirements

Government grants encourage the homeowners to make essential changes to their properties and make them safer, more energy conscious and more accessible. Applicants to these programs are required to provide detailed information as per the requirements of their grant application. You might also need to provide the government with receipts to prove that the grant money has actually been used for making repairs.

Other Grants

Many grants being offered by local and federal governments are specifically targeted to certain ethnic groups or demographic groups. These include rural farm assistance and Native American housing assistance, and programs for disabled citizens and seniors. Some grant programs are also targeted for specific cities, residential colonies and localities.

Emergency grant programs are also available for people from moderate-income groups. The maximum amount for this type of grant is $2,000 and is to be used for making emergency repairs to remove the risks of safety hazard.
