Repair a leaky manufactured home roof using basic supplies.
Manufactured home roofs are generally composed of metal for stability, longevity and energy efficiency. Although manufactured metal roofs are designed to withstand all climates and weather conditions, they can acquire leaks from rust patches and worn roof sealants. Leaks require immediate treatment to prevent water from seeping into a manufactured home's interiors and permanently damaging the flooring, walls and insulation. Properly maintaining manufactured home roofs preserves their structural integrity and allows them to last several decades. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Scrape all dirt, rust and flaking roof coating off the damaged portion of the roof using a putty knife. Completely clean the metal to prepare the surface for the repair.
2. Adhere four 2-inch wide strips of butyl tape in a square around the perimeter of the leaking area.
3. Cut out a square patch from galvanized sheet metal using tin snips. Design the metal patch large enough to cover the leaking area by 3 inches on all four sides.
4. Lay the square metal patch over the butyl tape. Using a power drill, pre-drill holes through the patch, butyl tape and roof every 2 inches along the perimeter of the patch.
5. Drill sheet metal screws into the pre-drilled holes along the perimeter of the metal patch.
6. Seal the screw heads and edges of the metal patch with caulk. Apply the caulk according to the product manufacturer's instructions. Allow the caulk to air-dry for the time span instructed by the manufacturer.
7. Apply roof coating to the edges of the metal patch using a paintbrush. Follow the roof coating manufacturer's instructions. Let the roof coating air-dry according to the instructions printed on the product's label.
