Several certifications are available for appliance repair.
Certification in appliance repair is beneficial to stay abreast of changes regarding repair and technology of new appliance models. While certification is not mandatory, it offers advantages when seeking employment.
Certifying Agencies
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) and Professional Service Association (PSA) offer the two nationally recognized certifications for appliance repair.
Areas of Certification and Credentials
The ISCET offers the National Appliance Service Technician Certification (NASTeC) which tests on the levels of basic skills, laundry and dishwashing, cooking and refrigeration appliances. Individuals who pass all four areas earn the Universal Technician designation. The PSA's Certified Appliance Professional covers tests the same areas as the NASTeC. Individuals who pass the PSA exam earn the Master Certified Appliance Professional (MCAP) designation.
Renewing Certification
There is no expiration for the International Society of Certified Electronic Technicians certifications, but they do recommend and offer continuing education courses. Certifications through the PSA expire after 2 to 4 years, depending upon the area of specialty.
