State Police candidates undergo rigorous screening.
State police units are special law enforcement units that have the authority to conduct statewide criminal investigations and law enforcement functions. State police officers perform the same duties as city and county officers but their jurisdiction is across an entire state. Officer candidates undergo a rigorous screening and application process.
Instructions
1. Get physically fit. State police officers are expected to have stamina and strength. You will be tested to ensure you measure up to acceptable standards.
2. Obtain a background check. Your application will be rejected if you have a criminal record or fail to produce a background check with your application. The state police may also have the Federal Bureau of Investigation run a check on you as part of the application process.
3. Pass the entrance exam. The written test qualifies your ability to understand law enforcement concepts and general knowledge. If you fail the test you can retake it at a later date.
4. Schedule an interview with the state police. You will be interviewed for a position once you have passed the fitness exam, background check and entrance exam. Contact the interviewing officer and agree on a suitable time.
5. Complete a drug test, psychological test and a detailed medical exam. If you pass all three tests you will be able to attend state police academy training. However, if you fail any of the tests, your application will be denied.
6. Attend the state police training academy. Usually you will be required to live at the academy while you are in training. You will learn law enforcements techniques and concepts that use your mental and physical abilities. Your staff sergeant will let you know how long you will be attending the academy and what the training schedule and requirements will be.
7. Accept a state police position. After completing all of the required tests, exams and training you will be eligible to accept a position with the state police.
