Florida's historic Key West homes exemplify the state's preservation efforts.
Florida's Department of State is responsible for the state's historic preservation efforts, for which projects to restore historic homes qualify. The office of the Department of State includes the Division of Historical Resources, which promotes Florida's historical, folk culture and archaeological resources. The division's director is the state historic preservation officer. Federal and state funds provide for Florida's historic preservation grants, and the state's statutes provide governance for the operation of the grant programs.
Bureau of Historic Preservation
Florida's Bureau of Historic Preservation, an office of the Division of Historical Resources, administers two grant programs that support historic preservation projects. Preservation may include identifying historic and archaeological sites, excavation, protection and rehabilitation. The bureau conducts programs to encourage historic preservation efforts in rural areas and in small cities.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants for Florida's Historic Preservation grants include state and local government agencies, colleges and universities, school districts and nonprofit organizations. Applicants must own the historic property or have the agreement of the property owner to conduct the project.
Historic Preservation Small-Matching Grants
Appropriate projects include building rehabilitation or stabilization, surveying and planning, and other work performed to support restoration projects. The maximum grant amount is $50,000, as of 2010. Applicants must match each dollar of state funds requested with cash or in-kind donations. Projects located within Rural Economic Development Initiative, or REDI, counties and communities may apply for a waiver of the matching requirement. The grant funding period runs from July through June of the next year. The grant application deadline is Dec. 15.
Special Category Grants
The Bureau of Historic Preservation evaluates applications on the historic significance of the project, among other considerations. Applicants must request grants of $50,000 or more. Grants are awarded up to $350,000, as of 2010. The required match of grant funds is the greater of $50,000, including cash and in-kind donation, or 50 percent of the grant amount. REDI-qualified applicants match 10 percent of the requested grant amount. The application deadline is Aug. 31. The funding period is July 1 to June 30.
Historic Preservation Grant Application
Florida uses an online grant system for its preservation grants. The online grant system requires applicants to create a user name and password and allows them to create applications only during active application periods. The grants system provides all of the required forms online, including the solicitation notice, application checklist, application preview and application instructions. After applicants submit their online applications, they must mail a copy of the application and all attachments to the Bureau of Historic Preservation.
