Repair Ford Explorer Window Motors

Ford Explorer window motors can be removed without removing the window regulator from the door frame. The window regulators are bolted into the window regulator. Each window motor is specific to the location in the vehicle as to what side and what door, front or rear, left or right. Make sure to correctly identify the location from the standpoint of sitting in the vehicle.

Instructions

1. Remove the Phillips screws from the armrest using the Phillips screwdriver. There will be two screws in this area. Remove the screw in front of the door handle and then remove any screws on the bottom of the door panel (if there are any). Whether there are screws on the bottom of the door panel depends on the year.

2. Remove the window master switch using the small common screwdriver by inserting it in the rear of the window switch and prying the rear of the switch up, lifting the switch out and removing the electrical connector.

3. Lift the door panel up by grabbing the bottom of the door panel and raising it to remove the hooks on the back of the door panel from the recesses in the door. Rotate the bottom of the door panel outward to release the top curved part of the panel from the horizontal rail on the door, and remove the panel.

4. Remove the plastic water guard from the door. The plastic water guard conceals the window motor. Remove the electrical connector from the window motor.

5. Remove the 10 mm bolts from the window motor. These hold the window motor to the window regulator. Hold the window regulator in hand and face the gear upward. Remove the two screws in the cover around the gear and remove the cover. The motor uses a large plastic gear with plastic cylindrical buffers around the center of the gear to protect the main gear. These will be broken into pieces. Use the small screwdriver to lift the large white or yellowish gear out of the motor. Clean this gear of all pieces and then clean all the broken material out of the motor around the gear.

6. Insert the large gear back into the motor and install new plastic buffers in the obvious cavities. Use plenty of grease on the buffers. If the plastic buffers are not available, 10 mm nuts do just as well in these spaces. Install the cover over the gear, install the two screws and tighten. Replace the motor and panel in reverse order of removal.
