Most bobbin issues can be resolved at home.
A bobbin is the small spool of thread residing inside the sewing machine, below the needle. To operate a sewing machine, thread from both the spool and bobbin must properly interlock around the fabric. Bobbins are often a source of frustration while sewing. They can jam up, break your needle, or provide the wrong amount of tension.
If your bobbin is causing issues, there are several ways to approach the problem without taking your sewing machine to the repair shop. More often than not, the issue can be resolved at home.
Instructions
1. Remove the bobbin from the machine. Ensure it has enough thread left on it to maintain tension when it is pulled and that it is not simply sliding around the bobbin. Make sure the thread is on the bobbin evenly and does not overlap itself, creating more tension than needed. Examine it for dust and broken thread. Using scissors, snip off any broken pieces of thread and wipe away dust with a cotton swab.
2. Read your machine's user manual on inserting the bobbin into its case. Make sure you are not inserting it backward, and that the thread feeds into the casing in the right direction. Doing this the wrong way can have an adverse effect on the thread's tension.
3. Remove the shuttle pieces from your machine and wipe them clear of dust with the cotton swab.
4. Examine the inside of the machine where the shuttle goes. Use the cotton swab to wipe away any dust. Use your tweezers to remove any broken threads stuck in the pieces. If your swab is getting stuck on the pieces, dip it in oil and use it to wipe away dust.
5. Open your oil tube and squeeze a single drop of oil onto all major joints on the inside of the machine as outlined in your user manual.
6. Load the shuttle back into the machine. Insert your clean, properly threaded bobbin. Make sure the thread is the same makeup as the thread you are using for the top seam, otherwise you will throw off the tension.
