Appliance service technicians service and repair a range of appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and clothes dryers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that certification for this profession is optional, however, it is often preferred by employers and can help with career advancement.
Becoming Certified
The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) offers the national appliance service technician certification (NASTeC). To become certified, you must pass the required examinations. Training for the examinations can be done independently using their recommended resources for study or you can attend the NASTec recommended "Fred's Appliance University" course.
Training
The course takes three weeks of intensive training. Topics covered include washers, electrical theory, brazers/soldering and dehumidifiers. The course includes all manuals and study materials room and board and the cost of taking the NASTec examination at the end.

The benefit of training and gaining certification in this field is that it may distinguish you when applying for work in a competitive market. Training also provides opportunities for career advancement to supervisory roles and ultimately better pay.
