Maryland Car Inspection Requirements

In Maryland, all used vehicles must pass a safety inspection and receive a "Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate" in order to be registered. The inspection must be performed at a licensed inspection station. The fee for the inspection varies by station. You may obtain a temporary registration valid for 30 days if you need additional time to have the inspection completed. If the vehicle fails the inspection, you must complete necessary repairs and have the vehicle re-inspected. The re-inspection fee also varies by station, but many locations, such as the Inspection Station, do not charge for re-inspections.


Steering and Wheels


The steering wheel and column must be functioning well and the wheels must be properly aligned. In addition the wheels and tires must be in good condition. Tires must have adequate tread and not show uneven wear.


Brakes


Brakes must pass a stopping road test or decelerometer test. Brake pads and discs must show good condition. Pads should be at least 2/32 inches thick. In addition, the parking brake is inspected to ensure it will hold the vehicle.


Lights, Windows and Mirrors


All lights are checked to ensure that they are not burned out and that the lenses are not cracked or broken. Headlights are inspected for correct aim: neither too high nor off to the side.


The windshield should be free of cracks and the windshield wipers should be operational. In addition, windows are checked to ensure the tint is not too dark.


Rear and side view mirrors are checked for cracks and to make sure they remain adjustable.


Doors


The door hinges and handles should open and close. The trunk should open and latch correctly and the trunk floor should be free of holes and rust. In addition, the hood should open and latch correctly.


Electrical System


The electrical system should be working and there should be no frayed wiring. The horn must work. In addition, the battery cables must be in good condition and the battery must be secured.


Interior of Vehicle


The driver's seat must be mounted securely. Seat belts must be functioning with no tearing or frays.


Speedometer


The speedometer must be visible and accurately report the speed of the vehicle in miles per hour and kilometers per hour.


Other Systems


Other engine systems such as the fuel and exhaust system should be in good, working condition. Vehicles are inspected for leaks. In addition, everything should be properly installed and mounted on the vehicle.
