Learn about grants for homes to go green.
Going green means creating more environmentally friendly designs and systems, with special attention to preserving landscape and wildlife, using long lasting sustainable materials and keeping the air clean. Several grants are available for helping homes go green and building environmentally friendly living establishments. Does this Spark an idea?
Charette Grants
Green Communities offers Charette grants to nonprofit housing developers who wish to incorporate green systems into their buildings with designs that conserve energy, use less natural resources and preserve the surrounding environment. Green Communities Charette grants help housing developers integrate environmentally friendly building techniques and green systems as early as possible in the process. Qualified applicants are nonprofit organizations involved in the construction of residential homes. Green Communities advises interested applicants to request the Green Communities criteria and technical manual to see if they fit the criteria. Applicants can be awarded up to $5,000 in funds. Charette grant applications can be found at the Green Communities website.

Home Depot Grants
The Home Depot Foundation offers grants for homes going green through the Affordable Housing Built Responsibly program. The grants are given to public charities in the United States and Canada directly involved in preserving or constructing homes for low income families. The Home Depot Foundation strongly supports green methods of housing design, including the preservation and planting of trees and other green spaces. Eligible projects should incorporate green practices, such as creating minimal destruction to surrounding natural areas, using durable, environmentally friendly materials, improving the quality of indoor air, and using trees and landscaping in the design. Though the Home Depot Foundation solicits proposals from certain charities, it sets aside some grant money for unsolicited proposals. More information can be found at the Home Depot website.
