The Amazon Kindle 2 does not need a computer.
Amazon's Kindle 2 ereader includes wireless access for you to download ebooks directly to the device without needing to use a computer. You can also use the wireless feature to download PDF, word and text files that you email to your Amazon Kindle account. Several issues can cause your Kindle 2 to have trouble downloading ebooks and files.
Kindle 2's Wireless Feature
The wireless feature on the Kindle 2 can be turned off to conserve the battery. Your Kindle 2's wireless feature must be turned on for the Kindle 2 to download books. To turn the wireless feature on, slide the bar on the top left to turn your Kindle 2 on, click the menu button on the lower right of the Kindle 2, and select Turn Wireless On. The icon next to the battery icon will show you the wireless connection strength.
Low Battery
A low charge on your Kindle 2's battery can cause downloading problems. To see if your Kindle 2's battery is charged, turn the Kindle 2 on by sliding the bar on the top left and located the battery icon in the top right corner of the screen. If the battery icon shows a low charge, plug the Kindle 2 into a wall outlet for a few minutes, then try to download again.
Approved Email Address
You can email documents such as PDF, word, and text files to your Amazon Kindle account, and Amazon will convert them to Kindle's format. The wireless feature will download them to your Kindle. To prevent unwanted emails from downloading to your Kindle 2, Amazon requires that you indicate in the manage Kindle section of Amazon.com which email addresses are allowed to send downloads to your Kindle 2. To verify that your email address is approved, go to Amazon.com, click Your Account, click Manage Your Kindle and scroll down to view Your Kindle Approved Email List. You can add and view your approved email addresses in this section.
Network Coverage
Poor network coverage is a common cause of Kindle 2 downloading problems. The Kindle 2 is available in two versions. The Kindle 2 U.S. version uses the Sprint network while the Kindle 2 International version uses the AT&T network. To determine the version of your Kindle 2 and which network it is using, locate the serial number on the back of the Kindle 2. If the serial number starts with B002, you have a Kindle 2 U.S. and are on the Sprint network. If the serial number starts with a B003 you have a Kindle 2 International version and are on the AT&T network. Coverage by both networks varies by location. Check the coverage map on Amazon.com to determine which Kindle 2 version will work best in your area.
Restart the Kindle 2
Sometimes the Kindle 2 needs a restart to fix download problems. If you have verified that your Kindle 2 is in a wireless coverage area, the battery is charged, and the wireless is on and your Kindle 2 still will not download a book, restart your Kindle 2. According to Amazon.com you restart the Kindle by pressing Home, then Menu, then Settings, then Menu and select Restart.
