Become A Locksmith In Texas

A career in locksmithing requires you to have knowledge and skill with mechanisms and the passion of working with your hands. Locksmiths design and repair locks and keys. Locksmithing is even considered as the first form of security engineering. As in any other state, becoming a certified locksmith in Texas requires passing exams, obtaining work experience and getting a license.


Instructions


1. Get a high school diploma, which is the minimum educational requirement for enrolling in a locksmith training program. Focus on courses such as mathematics, mechanical drawing, electronics and physics.


2. Consult the website or the offices of the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) and inquire about the training programs in Texas. You can also go the website of the Texas Locksmiths Association (TLA). The TLA also provides information on locksmithing schools around Texas and publications about locksmithing. There are a number of scholarships available for locksmith programs. You can also check out the option of applying to an online locksmithing school.


3. Apply to and finish a locksmithing training program. You can enroll at schools such as the ALOA Training Center in Dallas or the Cothron's School of Professional Locksmithing in Austin. Obtain a degree in locksmithing.


4. Obtain work experience. Contact your local union or non-union contractors and apply for a locksmithing apprenticeship. The conditions and the lengths of these internships vary throughout the state of Texas and usually depend on the contractor himself. Check out different apprenticeship options before you commit to an apprenticeship.


5. Learn as much as you can about becoming a locksmith. Subscribe to magazines and newsletters about locksmithing. Buy books on the subject of locks and locksmith business. Attend annual locksmith conventions and conferences in Texas, organized by the Texas Locksmith Association (TLA).


6. Apply to become a member of Texas Locksmith Association (TLA) and the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA).


7. Go to the Texas Locksmith Association website to download the licensing application package. This package includes instructions for preparing for the locksmith exam as well as the application form for the license.


8. Pass the exam for becoming a locksmith in Texas. Another necessary part of the process is to pass to a criminal background check.


9. Apply for a license to become a certified locksmith in Texas. Mail all the required documents, forms and proof that you paid the fee to the Texas Locksmithing Association.


10. Receive your certificate to practice as a locksmith in Texas.
