Donate Furniture In Nyc

Many NYC charities accept furniture donations.

"Home" is a constantly changing concept, when your once-prized end table and lamp have lost their oomph. Instead of pining over the short lifespan of great design schemes, however, use your time deciding which nonprofit organization in New York City you're going to donate them to. Housing Works specializes in helping homeless people with HIV/AIDS, while the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul provides a gamut of services to anyone in need. There are a variety of local charities to choose from, some of whom even pick up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a digital camera to photograph the old furniture and upload the pictures to your computer. Contact your favorite community nonprofit to see if they're in need of a donation. If so, email the pictures to the interested party and ask them to get back to you so you can arrange for a pickup or drop-off. If they're not interested, expand your search.

2. Using either the phone book or online version of your New York City phone directory, search under "charities in NYC," or "furniture donations." If you need to have your furniture donations picked up, contact only charities who provide this service.

3. If you need your furniture donations to be picked up, contact only charities who provide this service.

If you're referred to a website to fill out an online form to schedule a pickup, contact the charity by phone first, to be sure you're getting the most up-to-date information. You can also ask if your donation is tax deductible, as well as find out if the charity offers guidelines about value donations when filing taxes.

4. Agree on a time to have your furniture picked up, then provide your address and contact information. If possible, arrange to be home that day so you can get a receipt. If not, ask the charity to leave your receipt with a doorman or in your mailbox.
