Replace Mobile Home Roofs

Replace Mobile Home Roofs

Your mobile home roof will survive only a limited amount of patching before the rust comes to the surface and the coating begins to breakdown. When that happens, it is time for a new roof. Replacing the roof yourself will save you a lot of money you would have spent on repairs. To replace a mobile home roof, you must first remove the old roofing material and scrape the roof clean. Consider hiring help to scrape and clear the roof. Building the roof is done by installing roofing materials one layer at a time according to instructions. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Position rows of fanfold insulation lengthwise across the clean roof. Trim off any excess insulation with a utility knife. Tape the seams of the fanfold insulation with duct tape. Use a drill and 3-inch sheet metal screws and neoprene washers to secure the insulation for the next step.

2. Position 1 x 4-inch furring strips lengthwise, from end to end and 2 feet apart, across the length of the roof. Feel around the surface of the roof to locate the rafters and mark the locations with chalk lines across the insulation and furring strips. Use a drill and 3 1/2-inch deck screws to secure the furring strips to the rafters.

3. Measure the width of the roof and add 8 inches for overhang allowance. Cut the metal roofing to size using a circular saw. Position the first sheet of metal flush with the end of the roof and with 4 inches of overhang on each side. Insert foam closure strips into each end of the metal sheet. Use a drill and 3 1/2-inch deck screws with neoprene washers to screw the tin to the furring strips.

4. Measure the vent locations and cut corresponding holes in the metal to fit over vents. Use neoprene rubber roof cement to seal around all vents after replacing any cracked or damaged vent rubber boots.

5. Position gables at each end of the roof and use a drill and 3 1/2-inch deck screws placed every 12 inches on the top and bottom.

6. Use a long-handled paint roller to apply a coat of white elastomeric coating to the new metal roof. Follow the direction on the elastomeric coating label for number of coats and drying times.
