Fix A Garbage Disposal With Glass Inside It

If you accidentally drop a glass in the sink and harm your garbage disposal, you can repair it yourself with a few easy steps. If you are not able to remove the broken glass from the garbage disposal through the drain, you will have to disconnect the disposal to clean out the debris. Before calling a plumber, save time and money by repairing your own appliance. If you follow these simple instructions, your broken disposal will be up and running in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug the disposal; most disposals are plugged into an electrical socket underneath the sink. As a safety precaution, test the disposal switch to make sure that its power source has been cut off. If you need supplies, check out a home appliance store such as Home Depot or Lowe's (see resources below).

2. Unhook the disposal from underneath the sink. Place the bucket under the sink to catch water. Unscrew the drain pipe from the disposal using the pipe wrench. When the drain pipe is disconnected, unscrew the disposal from the bottom of the sink; use the pipe wrench if needed.

3. Clean the disposal after you have disconnected it. Use a brush, washcloth or any other cleaning device to clean the glass from the disposal. Avoid the sharp edges from the broken glass as well as from the teeth of the disposal.

4. Reconnect the disposal. Wrap thread tape around the thread of the sink drain where you disconnected the disposal; wrap tape around the threads of the drain exit on the disposal as well. Once done, reconnect the disposal back under the sink. Then reconnect the drain pipe to the disposal. Tighten with the pipe wrench.

5. Plug the disposal in. Turn the water on and let it run for a minute or two to make sure there are no pipe leaks. Connect the disposal to an electrical source; turn the water on to make sure that the appliance works.
