Plumbing Merit Badge Requirements

The plumbing merit badge teaches your Scout the basics of plumbing.


Merit badges give Scouts the chance to increase their skills in about 120 different areas. Your Scout is allowed to earn merit badges as soon as he joins a troop. Earning merit badges is a big part of rank advancement and participation in the troop. Your Scout can earn as many merit badges as he likes, such as plumbing. The plumbing merit badge can be quickly earned after completing a few requirements. Does this Spark an idea?


Verbal Requirements


The verbal part of the plumbing merit badge requirements asks the Scout to describe a few things learned about plumbing from either the handbook or experience. The Scout must describe plumbing safety precautions, five health regulations of plumbing and how properly installed plumbing protects the health of his family.


Drawing Requirements


The second section of the plumbing merit badge asks the Scout to draw a diagram of a home hot and cold water system and explain keep it from freezing. Your Scout must also draw a diagram of a home drainage system and explain how it works.


Tools


Your Scout must be able to show use five important plumbing tools.


Materials


This section asks your Scout to show and explain use the following: water meter, washer, drainpipe, retaining nut, trap, plunger, union, solder, plug, flux, coupling, elbow, nipple and tee.


Pipes


Your Scout should be able to name the most popular pipes used in a home plumbing system and explain why those pipes are used. The Scout should also be able to cut, thread and connect two pieces of steel pipe.


Advanced Tools


Under supervision, your Scout should solder three copper connections using a gas torch. The connections should include a two straight copper pieces, a tee and a coupling.


Plumbing Demonstration


To complete the plumbing merit badge requirements, your Scout is required to replace a washer in a faucet and clean out a sink or lavatory trap.
