Remove An Alternator From A 1993 Ford Aerostar

Alternator

Think of the alternator as an electricity plant for your car. It creates electricity from the rotational power off the engine pulleys, then sends that power to the battery and the electrical system in the car. When the alternator fails, everything starts to shut down and, when you park the vehicle, you won't be able to start it again. Fixing the alternator is simple enough to do at home. First though, you have to remove the old one.

Instructions

1. Pop the hood and use the open-end wrench to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Repeat the process with the positive terminal.

2. Disconnect the battery cable leading to the alternator using the open-end wrench, then unplug the wiring harness using your hands.

3. Unbolt the rear support brackets from the alternator using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Loosen the idler adjustment using the ratchet as well, which is on the driver's side of the alternator. Loosen the pivot bolt as well, then push the alternator towards the engine to loosen the belt.

4. Slide the belt off of the alternator then remove the remaining bolts on the alternator using the ratchet. Then lift the alternator out of the engine bay using your hands.
