Repair A Refrigerator Water Line

Refrigerator water lines are equipped with a shutoff valve.

A refrigerator water line is a flexible line attached directly to the closest water outlet to the refrigerator. It supplies the water for the icemaker and water in the door. Correct a leak under the refrigerator as soon as you detect it to avoid damage to your floor and connecting cabinets. Changing the water line is an easy project that you can do yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and search for the shutoff valve to your refrigerator. If your home is plumbed for the refrigerator to be in a specific location, the water valve shutoff should be directly behind the refrigerator.

2. Measure the distance from the refrigerator to the water source, using a tape measure to make sure your new water line is the correct length.

3. Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. You may need to follow the existing line from the back of the refrigerator to the shutoff valve. The shutoff valve could be under the sink if your home was not originally plumbed for a refrigerator requiring a water line.

4. Remove the old water line from the refrigerator with the proper-size wrench and drain as much water as possible into a bucket.

5. Remove the old water line from the water source, being careful to contain any water left in the line.

6. Connect the new water line to the refrigerator and tighten the connection. Do not overtighten the connection; this could cause the water line to collapse.

7. Connect the new water line to the source of the water. Again, do not overtighten.
