Repair A Trailer House Roof

Trailer homes often need roof repairs.

Mobile homes, also called trailers, have their own types of maintenance problems depending on their age. Older mobile homes often have flat roofs, which can be damaged by the elements, ice and debris buildup, settling and age. Over time, this damage can cause cracks or holes around seams, pipes and edges where the roof meets the walls. If this damage is not repaired, water, bugs and small creatures can work into the roof, causing more extensive damage. Heat loss can increase through this damage. Roof repairs are not difficult but can be time consuming. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Inspect the roof. Place the ladder next to the house. Climb up to the roof to look for where the seams are located; these will also be where the supports are located. Use the supports to walk on when inspecting the roof. Work from one end of the trailer to the other end looking for worn edges around seams, holes, rips or other damage.

2. Seal the cracks or holes. Use patching cement for areas under 1/4 inch wide. Apply the cement directly into the crack or hole. Allow the cement to dry. Use melted plastic for damage greater than 1/4 inch wide. Set a plastic spatula against the crack or hole. Melt the plastic until it drips into the hole. Fill the hole or crack. Allow the plastic to dry. Use the hot plastic to seal gaps between the roof and any pipes that extend through it.

3. Apply roof sealant to cover the repairs. Spread two or more coats of sealer using a clockwise motion. Cover the entire surface of the roof. Allow the sealer to dry over 12 hours. Dry the sealant completely before continuing.

4. Apply the finish coating. Use paint brushes or rollers to apply the roof coating. Use silvercoat as the coating to create an effective, protective seal. Silver roof coating can last up to five years before needing replacement.
