Where To Get Heating Oil & The Cost Per Gallon

If you've recently relocated, and moved into a home that is heated by an oil furnace, you'll need to research your options for obtaining heating oil. The information will enable you to set up an annual heating budget and will provide you with a contact for when you need oil and services for your furnace. Does this Spark an idea?

Finding Heating Oil Providers

You can start with your local Yellow Pages directory, under the Oils-Fuel category, to find local heating oil providers. The local Chamber of Commerce can also provide referrals to local, trusted providers. If you have moved to a location where you already have family or friends, ask them to refer you to a trusted provider. It is up to you, however, to do your homework to find the best service and price available for your needs.

Types of Heating Oil Services

You can obtain heating oil in several ways. Full-service providers offer automatic delivery, 24-hour emergency services, budget plans and discounts for bulk purchases. C.o.d. providers offer bigger discounts on fuel, but payment must be made upon delivery. A variety of "hybrid" services are starting to emerge. These combine elements of full-service and c.o.d. providers, offering discounts and service contracts, also due upon delivery. Another way to obtain heating oil is through an oil-buying cooperative. This type of program uses the collective power of its members to negotiate discounts on fuel, service arrangements and heating equipment.

Budgeting for Heating Oil

To find the price per gallon of heating oil in your area, check the Energy Information Administration website. This website lists the daily price of residential heating oil, in cents per gallon. You can also call around to different providers to find out the cost per gallon that they are offering. Be sure to inquire about discounts or programs that will allow you to lock in a certain price for the year.
