Many community colleges in Michigan offer training in the electrical trades and in electronics. Electrician training often leads to careers in construction and facility maintenance. The industrial and power generation fields also require electricians. Emerging technologies in power generation, like solar and wind power, are now being offered at these schools. The industrial electricity and electronics program tailors its studies to those drawn to maintaining electrical systems and electronic equipment. The curriculum not only covers the basics of electricity but also helps the student to learn the requirements of the National Electrical Code. Courses in motor controls, power generation and distribution systems, and the maintenance of facilities and industrial electronics prepare students for jobs assembling electrical equipment, repairing electronics, and maintaining and installing electrical systems.

Electrician training programs at Lansing Community College offer an electrical technology degree, four certificates of achievement, and two certificates of completion that apply to electrical infrastructure. Students may select the electrical technology degree path with specialties in construction, or control and maintenance. Alternatively, they can choose studies that confer certificates of achievement in either of those areas. The certificate of achievements in utility/line maintenance, and control panel wiring, prepare the student for work in the power generation sector. The certificates of completion in electrical wiring, and machine control, help students learn entry level skills in the facilities or industrial trades respectively.

Mott Community College
Students learn about the sine waves of electrical current
The college offers 12 areas of study in its technology area of specialization. One group of courses covers residential electrical wiring, electrical circuits, and the National Electric Code. The residential electrical wiring course takes the student through a logical learning process by starting with electrical theory, print reading, uses of tools, and safety. The college offers instrumentation, embedded controllers, and electronics communications courses for those more interested in electronics. There are also courses for those interested in computer electronics and logical control systems. The electronics communications course prepares students for careers working with radio and power transmitters, amplifiers, and receivers. Courses also have lab work where students practice working with the tools and techniques they study in class.
