Prevent Kitchen Accidents

The kitchen is one of the primary places in the home for accidents. With risk factors starting with the linoleum or tile floors, the cooking activities, the electric and water usage and the amount of sharp implements in most any kitchen, it's no surprise that there's a chance of accident. But there are many things you can do within your home to help prevent kitchen accidents. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Be cautious of chaos. Preparing a meal very quickly leads to spills which can lead to accidents. Stay organized while cooking. Clean up any messes or spills as you go to prevent accidents.

2. Put cabinet locks onto all drawers and cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom. If you have small children in your home, this will help to prevent accidents that might occur by little fingers reaching in drawers where they don't belong. When you remove the cabinet locks, make sure you leave locks on the sharps or knife drawer to prevent any accidents.

3. Lock up any dangerous cleaning chemicals. You can put these up onto a high shelf, but be cautious when reaching for them. They could fall on you and cause an accident.

4. Get a stepladder to reach things that are up high. Never stand on a chair with wheels. Never stand on stacked up cardboard boxes. Don't jump to reach high things.

5. Use caution around heat sources. Turn pot handles inward to prevent hot pots from being knocked onto the floor. This also keeps them out of children's reach. Move flammable materials such as newspapers, paper towels and pot holders away from kitchen flames or stoves. Always stay close by when cooking flammable substances such as oil or fat. If they catch on fire, never use water to put them out. Try to cover small fires or use a fire extinguisher. Always store a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make sure your smoke detectors work.

6. Use common sense around electrical sources in the home. Keep electrical cords away from water sources. Replace any shredded, broken or exposed electrical cords. Install circuit breakers to help prevent any electrical accidents.

7. Watch your clothes and hair while cooking. Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves and tuck in shirts. Make sure you don't wear loose-fitting clothing while cooking.

8. Protect against cuts by storing knives in a knife holder or putting a cork on the point of all sharps.
