Replace A Broken Double Insulated Window Pane

Double-pane insulating glass can be expensive to replace if it gets broken, and even worse, losing the seal between the panes can cause the expensive glass to permanently fog up. The glass itself can cost up to $120 in some cases and if you have to hire a professional to install it, you're looking at well over $200 all because of a small crack or missing shard. You can't avoid buying the glass, but you can avoid hiring the expensive professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the vinyl double hung-window's entire sash containing the broken or fogged-up insulating glass by depressing the liners slightly and then pulling out the top part of the sash. To release one side, twist the sash from the counter-weighted springs that are connected to the sash bottom.

2. Take the sash--or window pane--to a repair specialist, who will measure the size and thickness of the glass panel and provide you with the new insulated window pane.

3. Wearing protective gloves, remove any broken glass from the frame and remove the rubber gasket that runs along the window's entire frame.

4. Dismantle the window's frame by removing one side of the frame.

5. Slide the glass into the frame.

6. Wedge the gasket back into the inner frame slot, between the glass panel and one side of the frame slot. Reassemble and reinstall the window by reversing the steps used to remove it.
