Replace The Muffler On A Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is one of the most popular and most affordable cars. This car has a very simple, yet reliable muffler and exhaust system. However, if the muffler on the Honda Accord makes a loud banging or shooting sound, or if it leaks, it's time to replace the muffler.

Instructions

1. Look to see if you need a new muffler on your Honda Accord by looking under the car towards the back to see if there are any small or large holes in the muffler or to determine if it has fallen off partially or completely.

2. Purchase a muffler for a Honda Accord that corresponds to the same year as your vehicle. Most auto parts stores stock and sell quality mufflers. Make sure you get the correct muffler that corresponds with the year of your car. Putting on the wrong muffler will not be effective. You can also consider purchasing a used muffler from a junk yard, but the quality will not be as good or as reliable as a new one.

3. Place an old blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the ground beneath the rear part of the Accord on the ground. You can also put the rear part of the car onto car jacks if desired. You will have to lie under the car to replace the muffler, so be sure to make sure the car is securely stable before attempting to remove the muffler.

4. Look over the old muffler and find all of the bolts. Spray the fasteners generously with a penetrating lubricant before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you to remove the screws and bolts with ease.

5. Remove the old muffler. Loosen any bolts with a crescent wrench that are around the muffler and take the muffler off. If the muffler is welded on, then you can break it away by knocking it with a sledge hammer or sawing it off with a hacksaw. Dispose of the old muffler properly by breaking it down into small parts. Put the small parts in a trash bag and throw away.

6. Replace the new muffler on your Honda Accord according to manufacturer's instructions. Make sure you line it up as straight as possible with the clamps and then tighten the bolts to hold it in place. The bolts should not be too tight because the muffler needs to move slightly to prevent damage. Make sure you hang the muffler with the muffler hangers that come with it. Do not put it on too loosely or it may fall off.
