Illinois Energy Assistance Programs

Elderly people may be given preference when disbursing energy funds.


Illinois families in need of assistance with energy bills can apply for help from various organizations throughout the state. Families must meet certain requirements to be eligible for assistance. In most cases, a family's income is considered when determining eligibility. Many of the organizations are funded by contributions from private citizens.


Ameren Illinois Warm Neighbors Cool Friends


Ameren Illinois Warm Neighbors Cool Friends program provides bill payment assistance. The program also provides home weatherization assistance to qualified families. The program targets families who normally do not qualify for assistance from the state and federal government. Funding for the program comes from Ameren Illinois, its employees and donations from customers. Families must be in danger of losing their heating source and be a customer of the company to qualify.


Nicor Gas Sharing Program


Qualified families can receive a grant once-a-year to help with the costs of heating a home from the Nicor Gas Sharing Program. Recipients must be customers of Nicor Gas to receive help. The program is administered by the Salvation Army. A family must meet the income requirements to receive assistance. Families can receive either a $400 or $450 grant that is paid directly to Nicor Gas on their behalf.


Springfield CWLP Senior Citizen Discount Rate


In Springfield, Illinois, the City Water, Light and Power company offers a discount to senior citizens. Residents can receive up to 10 percent off their monthly heating and cooling bills. Residents ages 62 years and older who meet the income guidelines can apply for energy assistance. The maximum qualifying income for a multi-person home is $40,068. Residents can apply for help at the CWLP office in Springfield.


Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program


The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps families who are unable to meet the costs of heating and cooling their home. The LIHEAP program provides emergency assistance when families are in danger of being disconnected by their energy supplier or the service is already terminated. The program also helps with one-time payments on energy costs and furnace replacement. Locally, the program is administered by community action organizations throughout Illinois.
