Fix Bay Window Drafts

Bay windows have the potential to let in drafts.

Bay windows add beauty and light to a room. However, they can also be an entry point for air if they are not properly sealed. There are several ways to eliminate drafts from bay windows, ranging from simple to somewhat labor intensive. Many draft problems can be solved by sealing around the inside of the sash. Some may require sealing around the window installation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a draft stopper. Draft stoppers are fabric or plastic tubes full of insulation or foam. Place a draft stopper at the bottom of the window sill to prevent drafts from coming in gaps at the bottom of the window.

2. Apply foam weather stripping. Press self-adhesive weather stripping at the bottom of the window sash to close any air gaps.

3. Apply V-channel weather stripping. Measure and cut V-channel weather stripping to fit the sides of the window sash and the area where the top and bottom sashes meet. Apply the weather stripping to these areas to seal any gaps.

4. Seal the window with caulk. Using a caulk gun, run a bead of caulk around the outside of the window frame on both the interior and exterior of the window. Smooth the caulk with a wet finger or a tongue depressor. If you have a window with several small panes set into a cross-hatch frame, you can also caulk around each of the frames to seal the panes.
