Fix Fender Rust Out Spots

Rust will do to fenders what termites do to walls.

Rust spots can develop over time on your car, and they can prove to be a bigger problem than just making it unattractive. You should get rid of any rust spots on your fenders before the rust eats away at the metal and creates holes in the fender, leading to even more difficult or expensive repairs. Fixing rust spots is a matter of not only removing the rust but then painting back the affected area it to protect it from rusting again.

Instructions

1. Apply an aerosol lubricant like WD40 to the rust spot and rub vigorously with a rag to get as much rust out as possible. Wipe away all the oil afterward.

2. Sand away the rust with rough sandpaper or a power sander if the rust is excessive. If you use a power sander, roll up the windows and tape or over all areas with towels or tarp where sanded material can fall into.

3. Apply a rust inhibitor spray to the surface that has been sanded down.

4. Apply touch-up paint to the area. For best results, wait 90 minutes after applying the rust inhibitor--which will double as a primer--then apply two coats of paint to the area, waiting 90 minutes in between coats.

5. Apply clear coat protectant to the painted surface after the last coat dries, spraying three layers of clear coat 15 minutes apart.
