You can save money by repairing small holes in your muffler pipe.
Muffler pipes, also known as exhaust pipes, often develop rust holes due to condensation buildup inside the pipe.The pipe rusts from the inside out. Once the pipe becomes too rusted, pin holes form in the pipe and eventually become larger holes that cause the vehicle to run louder. Although some motorists replace the entire muffler pipe once the pipe develops holes, you can repair small holes yourself and avoid the cost of replacing the entire exhaust system.
Instructions
1. Locate each hole in the exhaust pipe through visual inspection. Circle each hole with a black marker. To help find small holes, tap rusty spots with a ball peen hammer to knock the loose rust off the pipe.
2. Sand the area surrounding each hole with 400 grit sand paper to knock off loose rust. Use a file to remove larger rusted areas. With the larger rust removed, sand away any remaining rust with the sand paper.
3. Wipe the affected areas of the pipe with rubbing alcohol. This will remove any dirt, dust or rust particles from the pipe.
4. Apply a small amount of exhaust pipe repair putty over the hole and allow the putty time to dry. The drying time is dependent on the brand of putty you purchase. Refer to the label on the container for drying times. Generally, 24-hours of drying time is adequate.
