Builtin Oven Problems

Save money on service fees by repairing minor issues with your oven.

A built-in oven requires the support of cabinetry to remain upright, and certain built-in ovens like wall ovens don't take up any floor space. Proper maintenance can extend the life of your oven and keep it working properly. Fix minor problems with your stove, and save money on expensive service fees, especially on out-of-warranty products. Always disconnect your stove from a power supply before working on it. Does this Spark an idea?

Oven Not Working

If your oven has no power at all, verify that your power is on and that you have properly installed the oven. Compare your wiring to the instructions in your installation manual. If you own a gas oven, check that the gas supply is turned on and you have gas in your tank. Turn on the oven, and allow it to run for a few minutes to remove any air from the lines. Turn back on your circuit breaker if tripped, and replace any blown fuses. Verify you have selected either a broil or baking setting and that you have not selected a delay start setting.

Baking

Preheat your oven to reduce baking times, and keep the door closed. If your food is burning on the bottom, raise the rack to a higher position. Always use the proper cookware for your food, and read the recipe instructions for cooking settings and times. Evenly distribute food in the pan to reduce uneven cooking. If your food is still not cooking evenly, see if the oven is level. A bubble level helps you with this task. If the oven is not level, check your installation, or call your installer for assistance. Check the bake igniter on a gas oven and the baking element on an electric oven if your oven is not cooking properly. Replace the baking element if burnt out and the igniter if it has a weak flame.

Broiling/Oven Light

If your food is smoking or burning while broiling, move the rack down to a lower position. Remove extra fat from meats to reduce smoking. Check the broiler element or igniter. Replace these components if burnt out or defective. If the oven light is not working, tighten it if loose, and insert a new bulb if burnt out.

Self-cleaning/Error Codes

The oven self-cleaning cycle won't start if the oven door is not closed. If the oven is not completely shutting, push in the rack, and clean the door gaskets. If the gaskets are worn or extremely brittle, replace them. Select the self-cleaning cycle. Let the oven cool down if you have just used it. If the self-cleaning cycle doesn't completely clean your oven, the oven was extremely dirty. Run the cycle again. Excessive oven smoking and odor are indications of a heavily soiled oven. Error codes indicate a major issue with your oven, but these code meanings vary by oven model. Read your manual for error code meanings.
