Repair a DVD yourself with common household items.
A DVD can be repaired using a do-it-yourself technique that involves petroleum jelly or furniture polish, both of which can commonly be found in your home. However, it should be noted that these are only temporary fixes. Once you have used one of these products to repair your DVD, be sure to make a backup copy of your DVD as soon as possible.
Instructions
1. Place some petroleum jelly on a soft cloth, or spray some furniture polish on the DVD's scratched read/write surface.
2. Take the soft cloth and polish the DVD in a circular motion, starting from the inside edge of the DVD and working your way to the outside edge. The goal of this step is to clean the DVD and coat it with a layer of wax that will allow the DVD to be read by a DVD player.
3. Test the DVD in a computer or DVD player when finished. If the DVD functions correctly, immediately make a backup of the DVD in case the polished DVD does not maintain its functionality for an extended period of time.
