Cotton, nylon and elastic threads can be used on the New Home 990 Sewing Machine.
Produced in the 1970s by leading manufacturer Janome Sewing Machine Company of Japan, the New Home XR-VII Electronic 990 sewing machine is threaded in a similar way to those from other companies. Whether you are using cotton, nylon or elastic thread, the threading process is the same and should only take a few minutes. By ensuring your machine is threaded correctly before you begin sewing, you will avoid snags and other problems that could cost both time and money to fix.
Instructions
Wind the Bobbin
1. Turn the hand wheel so that the needle is at its highest point and open the shuttle cover plate next to the presser foot. Remove the bobbin case from the machine by opening the latch. Turn the bobbin case downwards so the bobbin drops out.
2. Hold the balance wheel with your left hand and rotate the stop motion screw towards you with your right hand so the stitching mechanism is disengaged. Place a bobbin on the bobbin winder spindle and turn the bobbin until its notch meets that of the spindle's spring. Push the bobbin down and push the spindle so its latch fits into the bobbin.
3. Position a spool of thread on the machine's spool pin holder and pass one end of the thread through the middle of the discs of the thread guide bracket. Bring the thread end through one of the holes in the bobbin case from the inside to the exterior.
4. Hold the thread in one hand and rotate the balance wheel several times so the thread is wound. Use the scissors to cut the thread, start the machine and run it until about 80% of the bobbin is filled.
5. Remove the bobbin from the spindle, cut the thread and tighten the stop motion screw.
Adjust the Bobbin Winding Device
6. Check the the bobbin is wound evenly to avoid irregular stitching. Loosen or tighten the top or lower thread guides accordingly by using a screwdriver to adjust the appropriate screws.
7. Position the bobbin case between the forefinger and thumb of your left hand and pull out a few inches of thread. Place the threaded bobbin into the case and guide the thread into the slot in the edge of the case. Pull the thread under the tension spring and into the delivery eye.
8. Open the shuttle cover plate and while holding the bobbin case by the latch gently place it onto the center post with the bobbin case finger in the notch at the top of the shuttle.
9. Release the latch and when you hear a click the case is locked in the correct position. Let a few inches of thread hang down.

Thread the Needle
11. Move the take-up lever to the highest position by turning the balance wheel towards you and then place a spool of thread on the spool pin holder.
12. Pass the thread along the upper arm threading guides. The thread must be guided downwards and from right to left around the tension discs, up and over the tension guard from behind and through the loop of the take-up spring.
13. Complete the upper threading process by guiding the thread up and through the hole in the take-up lever, down through the thread guides and into the thread guide at the lower end of the needle bar.
14. Moisten the end of thread with saliva and pass approximately two inches of thread through the eye of the needle from left to right.
