Canadian Homeowner Grants

Canada offers a variety of homeowners' grants to qualifying applicants.

Owning a home, with all of its rewards, can sometimes hold many challenges. Repairs can be costly, particularly for home owners on a tight budget. Homeowners in Canada benefit through many grant programs that are designed to assist qualifying Canadian homeowners with meeting these costs. These grant programs offer assistance to elderly homeowners, as well as low-income homeowners in need of emergency or much-needed home repairs.

Seniors' Independence Home Adaptions

Home Adaptations for Seniors' Independence (HASI), is a federally funded grant program offered through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Canada's national housing agency. The Home Adaptations for Seniors' Independence program provides grant funds to eligible seniors who reside in Canada, for the purpose of making additions or improvements to their homes that will enable them to continue to live independently. Grant funding can be used for the addition of wheel chair ramps, home modifications and a variety of home repairs aimed at providing improved access to seniors. In order to qualify for grant funding, applicants must be at least 65 years of age, meet income-limit guidelines and be using the funds for the improvement of their primary residence. Interested applicants must apply directly through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation office in their region.

In order to qualify for program grants, applicants must own a property that is at least 5 years old, does not exceed value limits and is in need of the approved repairs. The home must also be the applicant's primary residence and hold a Canadian address. Interested applicants must be able to show proof of income, ownership and identification and demonstrate proof of financial need. Applications must be submitted directly through the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

In order to qualify to receive grant funds through the program, applicants must demonstrate economic need with proof that their income does not exceed program guidelines. The home in need of repairs must be located in a rural area and be in need of urgent repairs of the roof, walls, ceilings, chimney, plumbing or electrical system.
