Troubleshoot A Sears Electric Water Heater

Sears brand electric water heaters are often manufactured under the brand name Kenmore and feature hot water for faucets and appliances throughout a home or business. Sears/Kenmore water heaters are available in sizes from 6 to 30 gallons. Most electric water heaters perform well for a long period of time with little interference -- however, if individuals experience problems with their Sears electric water heater, it may be beneficial to perform some troubleshooting before calling a repairman. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the power connection to the Sears water heater if the unit is not working. Replace or restart the local fuse or circuit breaker as necessary.

2. Turn off the water heater and unplug from the power supply if the water is not heating properly. Open the front access panel and remove the insulation. Locate the red button that is marked "Reset" and push the button. This is the "High Limit Temperature Switch" and may have been triggered at some point, resulting in limited water temperatures.

3. Ensure the power supply to the unit is turned on and the cold water line is connected to the cold water inlet if the water is too hot. Check to see if the hot water line is properly connected to the hot water outlet if the water is too cold. Adjust the temperature thermostat to increase or decrease the water temperature as necessary.

4. Clean the water heater relief valve, typically located near the base of the unit, if the water heater relief valve is leaking. This may be caused by sediment or debris. Wipe the valve clean with a damp cloth and ensure the valve is tightened securely.

5. Wipe down the elements on the hot water heater if the hot water heater is making excessive noise or is not performing as expected. Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the unit elements, including valves, connectors and nozzles. Dry with a clean cloth.
