Repair Leaks In Poured Concrete Basement Walls

Minimize the risk of basement leaks by repairing cracks as soon as they appear.


Basement walls are often constructed with concrete blocks or with poured concrete. Because concrete blocks have mortar seams and poured concrete does not, blocks tend to require more attention than poured walls. However, both designs are prone to cracking, which allows water to enter the basement through the cracks. Because poured concrete does not have mortar, it is a fairly straightforward process to repair a crack that leaks. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Remove the loose concrete surrounding the crack with a masonry chisel and a hammer. Wear safety goggles to prevent eye injury.


2. Scrub the crack with a wire brush to loosen small concrete particles within the crack.


3. Remove all dust and debris from the crack with a hand vacuum.


4. Inject concrete-colored latex masonry caulk into the crack with a caulking gun.


5. Smooth the caulk with a putty knife or trowel, ensuring that the caulk completely fills the crack, and allow the caulk to dry.
