Troubleshoot Sears Drill Batteries

Most drill batteries ship with a very low charge.

Sears drills are sold under the Craftsman brand. Drill battery technology has been improving and it's now possible to get lithium ion battery products for drills. This is an improvement over nickel cadmium, which was subject to short shelf life. Problems with both technologies can include charging and output issues. Troubleshooting Sears drill batteries can be accomplished by following some basic steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Charge the battery for three to five hours before using it. Most batteries ship with a very low charge. Place the battery on the included charging stand. Don't use a charging stand not designed for the battery---or for another drill. Also, use the AC adapter that came with the charger.

2. Align the raised rib on the battery pack with the groove in the stand if the battery won't charge. Make sure the contacts meet by seating the battery properly. You shouldn't have to force the battery into the charger. It should naturally fit. The red light will come on when the battery is seated correctly.

3. Unplug the charger from the battery supply when the battery is charged. Don't leave batteries charging once they have been fully charged if you notice performance issues. This is particularly relevant to nickel cadmium batteries. Lithium ion batteries can be charged and left on the shelf for up to a year without needing a boost. Nickel cadmiums will loose their charge over time. Try conditioning a nickel cadmium battery if it won't hold a charge by charging it fully, running it down completely and repeating several times. Avoid charging a nickel cadmium battery when the battery isn't fully depleted.

4. Lock the switch trigger on the drill by placing the rotation selector in the middle position--it's usually the button located where the handle meets the drill body---before installing the battery pack. Align the rib and groove like you did with the battery charger if it won't install.
