Fix A Blue Screen On Windows 7

Try a few simple remedies before taking your computer to a professional.

The "blue screen" is a general error screen displayed by Windows computers. It usually freezes your computer, rendering it useless without further intervention. The blue screen can occur for any number of reasons, but troubleshooting the problem can be difficult if your computer is frozen. Here are some ways to get rid of the blue screen and get your computer back up and running again. Before beginning each process, remove all CDs, DVDs and floppy disks from your machine.

Instructions

Start in Safe Mode

1. Press your computer's power button, and then press and hold the F8 button. You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears. Windows will then display the Advanced Boot Options screen.

2. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll down to the Safe Mode option, and then press Enter. Your computer will now boot in Safe Mode. Safe Mode boots up your computer with limited functionality, allowing the system to bypass any possible sources of the blue screen.

3. Troubleshoot the problem causing the blue-screen error.

Use Startup Repair

4. Shut down your computer and then repeat Section 1, Step 1.

5. Select "Repair Your Computer" and then press Enter when the Advanced Boot Options Screen is displayed. Choose your preferred keyboard layout and then click "Next."

6. Click "Startup Repair," and then follow the on-screen instructions to detect and resolve any system problems which may be causing the blue-screen error.

Use System Restore

7. Shut down your computer and then repeat Section 1, Step 1.

8. Select Repair Your Computer and press Enter when the Advanced Boot Options Screen is displayed. Choose your preferred keyboard layout and then click "Next."

9. Select System Restore from the System Recovery Options menu. Follow the instructions given to select a restore point prior to the date when the blue-screen error occurred.
