Do It Yourself Hvac Repair

Fix an air-conditioning unit only if you're comfortable with the repair. Call a service professional otherwise.

HVAC is short for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It's the technology that creates central heating and cooling. Some HVAC systems are very complicated, with complex combinations of ducts and machinery that makes DIY repair nearly impossible for the amateur. Call a service professional if you're at all nervous about your ability to perform a repair. But some HVAC repairs and troubleshooting are fairly simple. DIY repair saves money and may keep you cool if the system gives up the ghost during the summer heat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn off the unit's power before opening it up. This prevents injury due to sharp moving parts. Flip the circuit at the electrical main as well.

2. Open the face of the unit using a screwdriver to remove the screws.

3. Inspect the machine's filter if it's not turning on or cooling the house properly. Replace the filter if any dirt is present that's clogging the filter. Check the filter monthly during the cooling season to prevent stressing the HVAC system. The filter will be with the unit or in a return grill in the living room area.

4. Clean out the blower compartment using a vacuum to clean out any debris left by the filter.

5. Check the condensate drain if leaks are appearing. This is usually a PVC or metal pipe running along the front of the HVAC unit. Replace piping or connections when leaks are present. Check the fittings and pipes for cracks.

6. Inspect the condenser unit outdoors if the unit is not cooling properly. Remove the front plate using a screwdriver and inspect the condenser coils. Spray them with a hose if they're dirty to keep them from overheating. Cut away any plants from the condenser unit to keep them from growing into the unit.
