Repair The Top Rail Of A Chainlink Fence

Chain-link fences use a metal pipe as the top rail of the fence.

A chain-link fence provides a simple-to-install method of securing the boundaries of a yard. This form of fencing uses lengths of metal pipe as the top rail. Along with the fence posts and other hardware, the top rails act as a framework on which to attach the chain-link mesh. If a top rail in your chain-link fence has become bent or damaged, say from a large tree limb falling on the fence, you may replace it relatively quickly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the fence ties along the entire length of the top rail using the large pliers. Do not remove the fence ties from any of the posts that support the chain-link mesh.

2. Remove the nut from the bolt from one of the rail ends with the socket wrench and adjustable wrench. Lift the rail end up and away from the bracket it was attached to.

3. Tap the inner edge of the loose rail end with the hammer to loosen and remove the rail end. Loosen and remove the pipe from the other rail end, still attached. Slide the pipe out of any line post tops, if necessary.

4. Insert the new top rail pipe through the line post tops, if necessary. Insert the end of the pipe into the attached rail end. Tap the end of the pipe to seat it in the rail end.

5. Place the other loose rail end onto the end of the pipe. Align the rail end with the bracket on the fence post. Tap the rail end in place with the hammer.

6. Realign the bolt hole in the rail end with the bolt hole in the bracket. Reattach the rail end to the bracket with the nut and bolt.

7. Attach new fence ties around the top rail at regular intervals, hooking the ends to the chain-link mesh and bending them flush against the mesh with the pliers.
