Improve Your Home'S Energy Efficiency Easily

Improve your Home's Energy Efficiency - Easily

There are so many reasons to improve the energy efficiency of your home, especially in the cold weather. You will be more comfortable, save money, and do your part to help the environment. The best part is, there are many things you can do inexpensively (or FREE!) all by yourself to improve you energy efficiency. Here are some helpful hints on some easy steps you can take to improve your home's efficiency this winter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Start with your thermostat. One of the best ways to save money on your heating bill is to install a programmable thermostat. These can be purchased at any hardware store or Lowe's/Home Depot and a fairly simple to install. They allow you to set a desired temperature for different time periods so you can lower your thermostat automatically while you are scheduled to be out of the house or sleeping, and raise it automatically when you are at home. Personally, my programmable thermostat paid for itself (only $12!) on my gas bill the first month I used it. According to the government Energy Savers website, you can save 1% on your heating bill for every degree you turn down your thermostat. It can also help to get used to cooler temperatures when you are at home and just wear warmer clothes and blankets.

2. Keep the heat inside and the cold outside. Good, new siding, insulation, and windows/doors will ultimately keep your home sealed the best but don't fit in everyone's budget. Here are some simpler things that can make a big difference. First it is a good idea to identify and seal drafts. You can seal windows with clear plastic, and seal space around doors that may be leaky. Also take advantage of heat from the sun during the day by opening curtains of south facing windows and closing them at night. Finally, keep basement and attic doors closed and if you don't use a spare room often, keep the vents and doors closed so you aren't heating that room.

3. Utilize your fireplace. First make sure the damper is closed when the fireplace is not in use, as heat can escape through the chimney. Make sure the seals around the hearth and damper are snug. You can open a window an inch or two and lower the thermostat to encourage heat transfer within the room.

4. Make sure your appliances are efficient as well. You can lower your hot water heater temperature to 120F, and insulate the unit. Also, make sure your refrigerator coils are clean and set the refrigerator temperature to 36-39F and freezer to 0-5F. Replace light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs and be sure to replace the furnace filter often.
