There are many organizations that help seniors.
Depending upon who you ask, a senior citizen is defined as an adult of sixty or sixty-five years of age who is retired and may be living on a fixed income or pension. However, seniors vary in age, health, and needs. Some seniors are very independent and healthy, and require no assistance at all. Others need home health care or other assistance.
Civic Organizations
A senior center provides kinship and social interaction.
Throughout the country, there are various civic organizations that help seniors. Most communities have a senior center that provides programming, events and support for seniors. Senior centers offer resources for senior care, home health care, medical assistance and other senior services. Additionally, they provide an opportunity for social interaction and kinship. While there are senior centers that are privately owned and operated, most communities have a senior center run by local government.
Eldercare
Each state has eldercare organizations to help seniors.
Eldercare Locator is provided by the United States Administration on Aging to help find senior services within each community regarding health, financial assistance and elder abuse prevention. This is a valuable link to organizations across the country for important senior needs. National Care Planning Council offers a similar on-line service, which allows the user to find help for seniors in each state.
Membership Organizations
AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, is a membership organization offering a variety of services and information for seniors. AARP also offers discounts for travel and shopping, as well as lobbying local and federal government for the interests of seniors. American Seniors Association is another senior-based membership organization that purports to be more conservative politically than AARP. Association of Mature American Citizens is an additional alternative to AARP.
Service Providers
There are several organizations that provide home services to seniors under Title VI of the Older Americans Act, which promotes nutrition for seniors. One such organization is Meals on Wheels, which delivers food to seniors who are homebound. Other organizations provide home delivery of groceries. Some grocers offer this service directly to customers. Additionally, transportation services are provided through local and federal government links. These services are available to take seniors to doctor's appointments and other important appointments.
