Folk Art Christmas Ideas To Paint

Paint a wooden egg for a Christmas ornament.

Folk art is an expression of local and traditional cultures created in art forms such as sculpting, woodwork, fabric, paper and metal. Painted folk art reflects a culture more than an individual artist. Many traditional folk art styles have been passed from one generation to the next.

Wooden Spindles

Turned wooden spindles come in many variations of height and width. The curves and indentations of spindles are suitable for painting folk art figurines, a collection of different Santas or children dressed in wintry Christmas clothing.

Paint folk art versions of all your family members on standing spindles to display on a mantle with pine boughs, or use them to mark each family member's spot at the table.

A nativity scene painted on different shapes and sizes of spindles will make a unique folk art display. Make Mary holding baby Jesus, an angel with a star, three different wise men each holding a gift, Joseph and a shepherd with a lamb.

Floral designs work well on spindles, too. Christmas plants that can be depicted on the spindles include poinsettias in different colors, Christmas cacti, holly, ivy and mistletoe.

Folk art Christmas ornaments can be made with wooden shapes. Ideas for ornaments include angels, elves, Santas, nutcrackers and reindeer. The delicate spindles used for ornaments have no base to stand up on. They can be hung using thin fabric ribbon or embroidery floss.

Eggs

Instead of using the wax technique used in real Pysanki-style Ukranian eggs, paint the designs on wooden eggs so the work cannot break or rupture like a real egg. Designs include delicate symbols of birds, crosses, stars and geometric patterns that repeat all over the surface of the egg, or paint one pattern on the front of the egg and a different one on the back.

The egg can be presented as a unique gift at Christmas. Painted eggs can also be used as table favors for a colorful Christmas display. Add some to a floral display, holly or wreath in the middle of the table for a folk art centerpiece.

Hanging Plates and Bowls

Poinsettias, iconic symbols of Christmas such as an outdoor church or village scene in winter, stockings hanging on a mantel, a gingerbread man, a nutcracker or Santa Claus all make good subjects for folk art paintings on large wooden plates or bowls that can be hung on the wall.

Create a story piece using the wooden plate or bowl as the canvas. Use simple black shadow figures such as children dancing around a Christmas tree or a nativity scene. Black shadow paintings of each family member's profile painted one per plate and hung on the wall with Christmas greenery is a profile folk art version of a family portrait.
