Stripped screw heads can prevent repairs.
During a DIY project, it can be frustrating if a screw is stripped. That happens when the bit used to insert the screw is too hard, or the speed of the drill bit causes the bit to rub against the teeth of the screw. A stripped screw can prevent removal, which may require you to damage the screwed component to remove the screw; that is, if you do not know the proper way to extract it.
Instructions
1. Place a rubber band on the top of the screw head.
2. Press the screwdriver into the rubber band. Try turning the screw with the rubber band between the screw head and the screwdriver. The rubber band increases the friction. If this doesn't work, you need a retractor.
3. Drill a small hole into the screw head using a drill.
4. Insert the end of the retractor into the screw head and begin turning counterclockwise. The retractor will bite into the screw. Turn counterclockwise until the screw comes out.
